From the Principal
Dear St Colman's community,
Welcome to Week 8! What a busy couple of weeks we have had since our last newsletter!
Some of our Year 6 students spent last Monday at MRC in Noorat for a Discovery Day. This is one of their many visits to Noorat for the year to ensure that their transition into Year 7 next year is seamless. We celebrated our dads and other male role models in the lives of our students on Wednesday at our annual Father's Day Breakfast. Last Thursday we celebrated our Book Week with all students looking fabulous in their chosen costume. Thank you to all the parents for the wonderful Book Week dress up costumes! They were truly amazing! We have completed our four sessions of gymnastics in Warrnambool. These sessions provided our students with fun and exercise while they got to try some of the routines and equipment at Warrnambool Gymnastics centre. These sessions were run at no cost to our families thanks to a Sporting Schools Grant and some funding from our school. A busy week 7 concluded on Friday with our Year 3 and 4 students participating in Hoop Time in Terang.
Our students are very lucky to be presented with so many engaging and diverse opportunities at little additional cost to your families.
This week is also off to an exciting start with our Year 3 and 4 students heading off to Warrnambool for their overnight camp at Warra Gnan.
Read on to find out what else is happening in our school community. It is always a good idea to familiarise yourself with the key dates section of the newsletter. Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions, concerns or suggestions you may have.
Have a wonderful week.
Kind regards,
Janet

Year 5/6 Excursion to Budj Bim
On Friday, September 13th, our Year 5/6 students will be travelling to World Heritage listed Budj Bim (formally known as Mount Eccles) for their annual excursion. The Budj Bim Cultural Landscape is a unique place with universal heritage values that demonstrate how Gunditjmara people worked with the natural resources and environment of the Victorian south west region to establish a permanent place of human society over the past 30,000 years and beyond. The children will experience the 2 hour Tae Rak Guided Cultural Walk where they will go on a guided tour of the Tae Rak (Lake Condah) wetlands provides an overview of the Gunditjmara creation story, the lifecylce of Kooyang (eels) and the lake's extensive marine and birdlife, and continues on to see the network of aquaculture systems designed to trap and harvest kooyang (eel) for food and trade.
Permission forms will be sent out via PAM by the end of this week.
Vinnies needs your help!
St Vincent de Paul-Terang Mortlake Conference are looking for people to help them with delivery of food hampers and IGA vouchers in and around Mortlake. It is a voluntary position and would require you to be an associate member of SvdP . This means you can deliver goods etc but does not require you to attend meetings.
At the moment, we are servicing Mortlake from Terang but it would be so much better and easier to have someone on the ground in Mortlake.
If you, or someone you know, would be interested in this voluntary role within Vinnies and, in turn, helping some vulnerable members of our community, please make contact with Bernadette McKinnon.
Phone: Bernadette McKinnon 0400 926220
Email: tarabrae@bigpond.com
Second hand Uniforms
We have collected a selection of 'pre-loved' school uniforms that are available to ALL members of our school community. These items are free of charge, but it really is the 'luck of the draw' if the item you want is there or not! You are always welcome to come into the office to have a look at what is available.
Also, if you have any unused uniform items that you no longer need and are in good condition, please consider donating them to the second hand pile. All pre-loved items can be left at the office. Thank you!!
Hooptime
We congratulate our Year 3/4 students on their fantastic efforts at Hooptime in Terang last Friday. Thank you to Brianna Barr and Mrs O'Connor for coaching them and to Mason and Pippa Barr for being our umpires.
St Colman's Annual Major Raffle
Our major fundraiser for the year, our school raffle, is being drawn this week.
The success of the raffle relies upon the support of everyone within our school community. Thank you to our parents who have already given up some of their time to sell tickets at community ‘hot spots’ and thank you to those families that have already bought and sold raffle tickets. As predicted, ticket sales this year have been a lot slower than previous years. We appreciate that many local families are finding these times financially challenging and they have other commitments that they need to meet. However, the success of the raffle relies upon the support of everyone within our school community. If each family in our school bought or sold just four tickets, we will be able to make a profit. Remember, all profits go directly back to your children as we be using the money to upgrade our playground equipment.
The "Local Loot Draw" will take place at school this Thursday 5th September 2024 at 2pm.
First Prize $3000 in vouchers supplied by Mortlake businesses
Second Prize $1000 Neighbourhood Benefit EFTPOS card supplied by Acciona
Third Prize $500 voucher supplied by Bates IGA Supermarket Mortlake
Last year the raffle raised almost $10,000 for our school and we would love to do the same again this year. All money raised will go into upgrading our current playground.
Tickets are available to be purchased from the Try Booking link below.
Please share this link on one of your social media platforms!!!
A huge thank you to all of the local businesses who have supported our raffle this year. A special thank you to our major sponsors Scott's Betta Home Living, Acciona and Bate's IGA for their incredible ongoing support of our school!

St Colman's Footy Tipping
What an exciting end to our Tipping Competition we had. The winner was decided by the results of the very last game of the year. Thank you to everyone who joined our comp. As you are aware, this is not a fundraising event and all money received is returned to the place getters! Congratulations to all of the winners!
Overall Winners:
1st Place: Jason, Ivy and Sadie Wardlaw ($270)
2nd Place: Angela Absalom ($140)
3rd Place: Josh Jewell ($70)
Junior 1st Prize: Steff Van Den Heuvel ($60)
Junior 2nd Prize: Mason Dale ($40)
Junior 3rd Prize: Noah Bausch-Anderson ($20)
Story Time- cancelled this week
Unfortunatley, Mrs Moloney and our Junior Class will NOT be walking down to the Library this Wednesday to join in on Story Time. Hopefully we will be back again in a fortnight!
Playgroup at St Colman's
We look forward to welcoming back our local pre-schoolers every second Friday, with our next session being held on Friday September 13th.
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD WITH YOUR FRIENDS WHO HAVE PRE SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN. EVERYONE IS WELCOME!!!
The ongoing commitment to this project will require support from other members of the school community. If you are willing to help out by going on a roster to help organise Little Colman’s, please contact either the school or Lily.
WE WILL NEED TO PURCHASE SOME GAMES AND EQUIPMENT FOR OUR PLAYGROUP. HOWEVER, WE WONDERED IF YOU HAD ANY OLD TOYS AND GAMES THAT YOUR CHILDREN HAVE GROWN OUT OF AND THAT YOU NO LONGER NEED. IF SO, WE WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE THE DONATION OF ANY PRE-SCHOOL TOYS AND GAMES, INDOOR OR OUTDOOR, THAT ARE IN EXCELLENT USED CONDITION.
WELLLBEING
Congratulations to these wonderful student whose achievements were acknowledged at our last assembly.

RELIEF SCHOOL CROSSING SUPERVISOR - MORTLAKE
The Moyne Shire are currently on the lookout for someone to fill this position. If you, or someone you know might be interested in this position, please checkout the information pack below.
Our Student Representative Council will be co ordinating our partnership with Cooinda Terang to become a collection point for Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic).
We will be collecting all eligible empty drink containers and then returning them to the CDS collection point at Cooinda. The 10c raised from each return will go back to the SRC. They will nominate various charities to support as well as using 50% of the funds to upgrade school resources.
So please start collecting and sending in your empties.
Most aluminium, glass, plastic and liquid paperboard (carton) drink containers between 150mL and 3 litres are eligible. You can keep the lids on, we recycle them too. The easiest way to know if your drink container can be returned is to look for the 10c mark on the label, often located near the barcode.
You can help in two ways:
- The first is by far the simplest. Just return your empty eligible containers to the tubs in the corridors at school.
- If you have a large amount of containers to deposit, you may wish to take them to a Container Deposit Depot and return them yourself. Please download the CDS Vic West App (instructions below). When you return your containers, nominate St Colman's School Mortlake as the charity you want to donate the money to.
Please note, that as we are in partnership with Cooinda Terang, our preferred deposit depot is their Reverse Vending Machine located at 49 Dow St Terang.
